App Builder Agent vs Adalo: drag-and-drop or describe your mobile app

Adalo builds native mobile apps by drag-and-drop and publishes to both stores; App Builder Agent builds Android apps and websites from a description with exportable code.

Choose Adalo if you want a native app on both the App Store and Google Play from a drag-and-drop editor and you are comfortable with the app living on Adalo's platform. Choose App Builder Agent if you want to describe the app in plain English, get an Android APK or Play Store build in minutes, and keep the generated React Native or Flutter code. Adalo's advantage is iOS publishing from one project; App Builder Agent's advantages are speed, price, code ownership and websites and workflows from the same account. App Builder Agent does not build iOS apps.

Who each tool is for

Adalo is one of the better-known drag-and-drop mobile app builders. You add screens, drop in components (lists, forms, buttons, maps), connect them to collections in Adalo's database or to an external API, and configure actions such as "link to screen" or "create record". Adalo compiles a native app and, on paid plans, publishes it to Google Play and the App Store using your developer accounts. It also produces a web version. It suits founders and small businesses who want a straightforward consumer app (a directory, a booking app, a community app) and who like to see the interface take shape as they click.

App Builder Agent starts from a sentence rather than a blank screen. You describe the app in a chat, an AI agent writes React Native (or Flutter) code, and a phone preview runs in the browser. You refine it by describing changes, and you can open the generated code and edit it directly if you want to. The outputs are an installable Android APK, a signed APK and AAB for Google Play with your own package id, or a website published on an appbuilderagent.com address. The agent can add a hosted backend with a database, auth and file storage. It suits people who would rather explain than assemble, and who want to own the result.

Choose Adalo if

  • An iPhone version on day one is non-negotiable and you do not want to touch Xcode or a Mac.
  • You enjoy arranging screens visually and want to see each component as you place it.
  • Your app is simple: lists, forms, profiles and a few actions, without much custom logic.
  • You are fine with the app staying on Adalo for as long as it exists, and with a monthly plan for as long as it is published.
  • You want Adalo to handle the store submission mechanics from inside the editor.

Choose App Builder Agent if

  • Your users are on Android, or you plan to start with Android and add iPhone later from the exported source.
  • You want a first version today. Describing a login, a dashboard and a settings screen takes one message; the login and dashboard apps in the gallery show the result.
  • You want to keep the code so a developer can take over, or so you can move hosting whenever you like.
  • The app needs logic that is awkward to click together: availability computed from durations, a points system with expiry, role-based screens. Describing rules is easier than wiring them.
  • Budget matters. The free plan covers a first version; Member is $1.49 per 30 days at the time of writing.
  • You also want a website or a scheduled workflow (a daily report, an auto-reply) from the same account.

The same app in each tool

Consider a loyalty app for a coffee shop: customers sign in, collect a stamp per purchase, and redeem a free drink at ten. In Adalo you would create a Users collection and a Stamps collection, design a home screen with a stamp card component, a "redeem" screen, and a staff screen with a button that adds a stamp, then set up the actions and the conditional visibility for staff. That is a pleasant few hours if you know the editor, and the reward is a build for both stores on a paid plan.

In App Builder Agent you open the AI app builder and describe it:

Build a loyalty app for a coffee shop. Customers sign in with Google, see a ten-stamp card and their history. Staff login has a "add stamp" screen that scans the customer's QR code. Ten stamps unlock a free drink and reset the card. Hosted backend. Warm brown and cream design.

Minutes later the first version is in the phone preview. You refine it: "make the stamp animation faster", "add a birthday field and a free stamp on their birthday". Download APK in the Preview tab gives a test build for your phone; a one-click signed build produces the APK and AAB for Google Play. A worked version of this shape is in punch-card loyalty app for a coffee shop.

What to expect if you switch

From Adalo to App Builder Agent. There is no automatic import because Adalo apps are not code. Export each collection as CSV from Adalo, write down your screens and the rules behind them, and describe the app. The agent can import your CSV into the hosted backend if you ask. Expect a working first version in a session and a few more sessions for polish. You gain exportable code, cheaper plans and an Android build in seconds; you lose Adalo's one-click iOS publishing, which becomes an export-and-build-on-a-Mac job on a paid plan.

From App Builder Agent to Adalo. Also a rebuild. People consider it when iOS becomes a must and they would rather click than manage an Xcode build. Before doing that, check whether exporting the React Native source and using Expo EAS is simpler; for many apps it is, and it keeps the code.

Package ids and updates. If you already published an Android app from Adalo, the new build will have a different signing key and probably a different package id, so Google Play will treat it as a new app unless you can reuse the id and key. Plan the move as a new listing or a careful migration; signed APK and AAB for the Play Store explains what is permanent.

Tip: whichever tool you land on, install the build on a mid-range Android phone before showing it to anyone. Both previews are more forgiving than real hardware.

Costs and store fees

Adalo's publicly listed paid plans start around $36-45 a month at the time of writing, depending on the billing period, and scale with app actions and published apps. App Builder Agent's free plan gives 500K AI tokens a month (with a free APK download), with all features unlocked and no card; Member is $1.49 per 30 days for 5M tokens, unlimited APK builds and source export; Pro ($5.72), Business ($31.12) and Max ($11.01) add more tokens. A small app typically needs a few hundred thousand tokens to build and iterate. On top of either tool: Google Play's one-time US$25 registration, and the Apple Developer Program at US$99 a year if you go to iOS. The wider picture, including agency and freelancer routes, is in how much it costs to build an app in 2026, and the other tools in this space are lined up in best AI app builders in 2026.

Frequently asked

Does Adalo let me export my app's code?

No. Adalo apps are built and hosted on Adalo's platform, and it publishes store builds for you, but there is no source code export. App Builder Agent exports the complete React Native or Flutter project on the Member plan and above.

Which one can publish to the Apple App Store?

Adalo can, on its paid plans, with your own Apple Developer Program membership. App Builder Agent does not build iOS apps; you export the source on a paid plan and build with Xcode or Expo EAS on a Mac.

Is App Builder Agent harder to use than Adalo?

It is different rather than harder. Adalo asks you to place components and configure actions screen by screen; App Builder Agent asks you to describe the app and then describe changes. People who can explain what they want in a paragraph usually find the chat approach faster.

What does each one cost to start?

Both have free tiers. Adalo's free plan is for building and previewing; its publicly listed paid plans start around $36-45 a month at the time of writing. App Builder Agent's free plan includes 500K AI tokens a month; a free APK download is included; Member is $1.49 per 30 days.

Can I move an Adalo app to App Builder Agent?

Not automatically. You export your Adalo collections as CSV, describe the screens and rules in plain English, and the agent rebuilds it. Most small apps are re-described in an afternoon.
