App Builder Agent vs FlutterFlow: visual Flutter editor or AI agent

FlutterFlow is a visual editor that exports Flutter code on paid plans; App Builder Agent writes Flutter or React Native from a description and exports source on paid plans.

Choose FlutterFlow if you want to build visually, need iOS and Android from one project, and are willing to learn a real editor with widgets, state and actions. Choose App Builder Agent if you would rather describe the app and have an AI agent write it, get an Android APK in minutes, and keep the code. Both hand you a real codebase on paid plans: FlutterFlow exports Flutter, App Builder Agent builds Flutter or React Native and exports the whole project on the Member plan and above. App Builder Agent does not build iOS apps.

Who each tool is for

FlutterFlow is a visual editor that generates Flutter, Google's cross-platform framework. You compose screens from widgets on a canvas, manage state, define actions and API calls, connect Firebase or Supabase, and build for Android, iOS and web. On paid plans you can download the generated Flutter project and keep working in your own IDE, which makes FlutterFlow unusual among visual builders: it does not lock the app in. It suits people with some technical comfort (or a developer on hand) who want to move faster than hand-coding but end up with a real codebase.

App Builder Agent is a prompt-driven builder. You describe the app in a chat; an AI agent writes the code, shows a live phone preview in the browser, and applies the changes you describe. Projects can be React Native (the default for mobile) or Flutter, and the editor shows the generated code, which you can edit directly. The outputs are an installable Android APK, a signed APK plus AAB for Google Play, a website published on an appbuilderagent.com address, a game, or a scheduled workflow. On the Member plan and above you export the complete project as a zip. It suits people who would rather describe than assemble, and who want a phone build without configuring a toolchain.

Choose FlutterFlow if

  • You need iOS and Android from one project and want the builder to compile and publish the iPhone version for you.
  • You think visually and want to place every widget, set every padding and see the tree.
  • You or a teammate already know Flutter and want a faster way to lay out screens before dropping into code.
  • You want Firebase or Supabase wired in through the editor's own integrations.
  • You are building a larger app where a visual state model and reusable components pay off over months.

Choose App Builder Agent if

  • You want a first version in one sitting without learning what a widget tree is.
  • Your launch platform is Android, or Android first with iPhone later from the exported source.
  • You would rather say "add a login screen with Google sign-in and a dashboard with today's numbers" than build it; the login and dashboard apps in the gallery show the kind of result.
  • You want a hosted backend without setting up Firebase yourself: the agent adds a database, auth and file storage when asked.
  • You are working on a small budget. Member is $1.49 per 30 days at the time of writing and includes source export.
  • You also want a website, a game or a scheduled automation from the same account.

The same app in each tool

Take a gym client app: members sign in, see their programme, log workouts, and the trainer sees everyone's progress. In FlutterFlow you would design the auth pages, a home page with the programme list, a workout logging page with a form, and a trainer dashboard; define app state for the current user; set up Firebase Auth and Firestore collections; and add the actions for saving a log. Someone fluent in FlutterFlow can do this in a day; a newcomer will spend a week learning first. The result runs on Android and iOS, and the Flutter project can be exported on a paid plan.

In App Builder Agent you open the AI app builder and describe it. If you want Flutter specifically, say so:

Build a Flutter app for a personal trainer's clients. Members sign in, see this week's programme (exercises, sets, reps), log each workout with weights and notes, and see a progress chart per exercise. Trainer login lists clients and shows each one's last five workouts. Hosted backend. Black and lime design.

The first version appears in the phone preview in minutes. You refine by describing: "show rest timers between sets", "let the trainer copy last week's programme forward". Download APK in the Preview tab produces a test build for your phone; a signed build produces the APK and AAB for Google Play. The generated Dart or TypeScript is visible in the editor the whole time. A worked example of this app is in gym and personal trainer client app.

What to expect if you switch

From FlutterFlow to App Builder Agent. There is no project import, but you are in a better position than most switchers: you can export your Flutter project from FlutterFlow, and you can describe your app precisely because you built it screen by screen. Describe it in App Builder Agent, choosing Flutter or React Native, and use the old project as a reference for the details. You gain the chat workflow and cheaper plans; you lose FlutterFlow's visual canvas and its own iOS cloud build.

From App Builder Agent to FlutterFlow. Export your source from App Builder Agent on a paid plan. If the project is Flutter, a Flutter developer can continue in an IDE directly; FlutterFlow itself does not import external projects into its editor, so the "switch" is really to hand-written Flutter, or a rebuild in the FlutterFlow canvas.

Flutter or React Native? If you already have Flutter code or a Flutter developer, ask App Builder Agent for a Flutter project. If not, React Native is the default and the larger ecosystem for mobile; either exports as a standard project. Play Store mechanics are the same for both, covered in signed APK and AAB for the Play Store.

Tip: if the reason you are choosing is "I want the code", both tools deliver. Decide instead on how you like to work: canvas or conversation.

Costs and iOS

FlutterFlow's publicly listed paid plans start around $30 a month at the time of writing; code export and some publishing features are on paid tiers. App Builder Agent's free plan gives 500K AI tokens a month with no card; a free APK download is included. Member is $1.49 per 30 days for 5M tokens, unlimited APK builds and source export; Pro is $5.72, Business $31.12 and Max $11.01 with more tokens. A small app typically takes a few hundred thousand tokens to build and iterate. Add Google Play's one-time US$25 registration for either tool, and the Apple Developer Program at US$99 a year if you publish on iOS. Frequently asked

Do both tools give me real Flutter code?

Yes, with conditions. FlutterFlow exports the generated Flutter project on its paid plans. App Builder Agent can build the app as a Flutter project (or React Native) and exports the complete source on the Member plan and above.

Which one builds iPhone apps?

FlutterFlow can build and publish iOS apps from its cloud, with your Apple Developer Program membership. App Builder Agent does not build iOS apps; you export the Flutter or React Native source on a paid plan and build it with Xcode or Expo EAS on a Mac.

Is FlutterFlow harder to learn than App Builder Agent?

FlutterFlow assumes you understand widgets, state, actions and API calls, which takes days to weeks. App Builder Agent has no editor to learn; you describe the app and the changes, and read the code only if you want to.

Which is cheaper to start?

Both have free tiers. FlutterFlow's publicly listed paid plans, which unlock code export, start around $30 a month at the time of writing. App Builder Agent's free plan has 500K AI tokens a month; Member is $1.49 per 30 days and includes unlimited builds and export.

Can a developer take over an App Builder Agent project?

Yes. The export is a standard React Native, Flutter or Vite project that opens in any IDE, with no platform runtime required. The same is true of a FlutterFlow export, which is a standard Flutter project.
