Choose Replit if you want a full AI workspace for web apps, with a database, sign-in and hosting built in, and iPhone publishing: as of November 2026 its Agent builds mobile apps with Expo and publishes them to TestFlight and the App Store, but its docs say publishing to Google Play is not yet supported. Choose App Builder Agent if you tried Replit for a mobile app and what you really need is an Android app on real phones: you describe it, watch it run in the emulator preview, change it by chatting, and press Download APK, with no Expo, terminal or build setup on your side. Replit is better for web products and the App Store; App Builder Agent is the shorter road to an APK and Google Play.

Who each tool is for

Replit (replit.com) is an online workspace built around Replit Agent. As of November 2026 its docs say Agent builds web apps, mobile apps, data dashboards and AI-powered tools, and can also produce designs, slides, videos and files. You describe what you want, an optional Plan mode turns it into a task list, and Agent writes the code, sets up infrastructure, tests its own work and creates checkpoints you can roll back to. Every Replit App comes with a PostgreSQL database by default, with separate development and production databases, and Replit Auth adds sign-in with Google, GitHub, X, Apple or email when you ask Agent for it. Because it is a full workspace, you also get the file tree, a shell, a Git pane with two-way GitHub sync and a zip download of the whole project.

For mobile, Replit Agent builds apps with Expo, the React Native toolkit. You test them by scanning a QR code with the free Expo Go app on your phone, or, on Core, Pro and Enterprise, in an iOS Simulator or Android Emulator streamed into the Preview panel. iPhone publishing is built in: once the web app and API server are published, the Publishing tab opens a Launch wizard that compiles the app on Expo's servers, signs it with your Apple Developer credentials and uploads it to App Store Connect for TestFlight or App Store review. Android is the gap. The docs say you can build and preview Android apps, but publishing to Google Play is not yet supported, EAS CLI and EAS Build are not supported on Replit, and they do not describe an APK or AAB download. Replit suits people building web products, teams that want a real development environment, and founders aiming at the App Store.

App Builder Agent starts from the Android phone. You describe the app in plain English in a chat; an AI agent writes one React Native codebase (or Flutter, if you ask); the app runs in the emulator preview in the builder, where you tap through it; and you change anything by chatting. Download APK in the Preview tab gives you a file you install on any Android phone, and on paid plans a signed APK plus AAB is ready for Google Play. There is no terminal, no build service to set up and no developer account needed until you list on Google Play. A hosted backend with an online database, sign-in and an admin panel is added by the agent when you ask, and AI features in the app use the AI backend that comes with the project. It suits people who want an installable Android app this week, not a development environment.

Choose Replit if

  • Your product is mainly a web app: a SaaS, a dashboard, an internal tool, with a real database and hosting in one place.
  • You want iPhone publishing built in, from the Publishing tab to TestFlight and App Store Connect, and you have (or will buy) an Apple Developer membership.
  • You are comfortable in a developer workspace and like having the shell, the files and Git one click away.
  • You work with others: Pro allows up to 15 collaborators and database rollback up to 28 days.
  • You want one tool that also makes dashboards, slides and data visualisations alongside the app.

Choose App Builder Agent if

  • You tried Replit for a mobile app and what you need is an Android APK you can install and share today.
  • You want Google Play without leaving the builder: a signed APK plus AAB comes out of the same project on paid plans.
  • You do not want developer tooling: no Expo Go, no build service, no terminal, just the emulator preview and Download APK.
  • You want to start free with Google sign-in and no card, and see your first app on a real phone before paying.
  • You want phone features such as camera, reminders, voice and maps, or hosted checkout with Stripe, Razorpay or PayPal, added by asking. The booking apps in the gallery show what one description produces.

The same app in each tool

Take a common case: a mobile dog groomer wants a booking app for clients. Clients pick a service, choose a free slot and leave their pet's details; the groomer sees today's bookings and gets a reminder the evening before. Most of the groomer's clients use Android phones.

In Replit you choose Mobile app as the app type and describe it to Agent. It writes an Expo app, and you scan the QR code with Expo Go to try it on your phone, or open the Android Emulator in the Preview panel on a paid plan. Ask for accounts and saved bookings and Agent wires in the database and Replit Auth. For iPhone clients the path is clear: publish the web app and API server, then run the App Store Launch wizard with your Apple Developer account and send the build to TestFlight. For the Android clients, Replit's docs stop at building and previewing. To get an installable Android file you would take the project out (zip or GitHub) and produce the build yourself with Expo's tooling, which is exactly the developer work many people came to an AI builder to avoid.

In App Builder Agent you open the APK app builder and describe it:

Build an Android booking app called "Groom Slot" for a mobile dog groomer. Clients see a list of services with prices and durations, pick a day, then a free time slot. They enter their name, phone number, the dog's name, breed and size, and any notes. The groomer has an owner screen with today's and tomorrow's bookings in order, can mark a booking done or cancelled, and can block out days off. Send the client a reminder notification the evening before. Friendly design with a teal accent and large buttons.

The app appears in the emulator preview within minutes. You book a test appointment, check the owner screen, then refine by chatting: "add sign-in so clients see their past bookings", "save bookings online so the owner sees them on her phone", "take a deposit with Stripe at booking". The first two bring in a hosted backend with an online database; the deposit uses hosted checkout with your own Stripe account. Press Download APK in the Preview tab, install it on your phone and send it to a few regular clients. When you are ready for Google Play, the signed build on a paid plan gives you the APK and AAB. The details for this kind of app are in build a booking and appointment app, and the one-click starting point is the booking app maker.

What to expect if you switch

From Replit to App Builder Agent. There is no import of projects from other tools. Keep your Replit project (download it as a zip or keep the GitHub repository), open the running app next to the builder and describe it screen by screen: what each screen shows, what each button does, what has to be saved online. Data in Replit's PostgreSQL database does not move by itself; plan to re-enter it or export it separately. If your app is already in the App Store through Replit, it can stay there: you can keep Replit for iPhone and use App Builder Agent for the Android version. You gain an APK on the free plan and a signed APK plus AAB for Google Play; you lose Replit's built-in App Store publishing and its full workspace.

From App Builder Agent to Replit. On a paid plan, export the complete project. As of November 2026 Replit's docs describe importing a zip of up to 200 MB at its import page, and note that imports which need Agent migration work can use credits and that database data and environment variable values are not imported. If you exported React Native, Replit's mobile tooling is also built on React Native through Expo, but expect Agent to adapt the project rather than run it as is.

Using both. Plenty of people will end up here: Replit for the web app, the admin side or the iPhone build, and App Builder Agent for the Android app their customers install. They are separate projects with separate backends, so decide early which one holds the shared data, and keep the screens and wording in step by describing the same features to both.

Tip: before you choose a tool by its feature list, ask where your first ten users are. If they are on Android phones, an APK you can send them today will teach you more than a store listing next month.

Free options, stores and iPhone

As of November 2026 Replit's pricing page starts at Core, at $20 a month or $18 billed annually, with Pro at $100 or $90 billed annually; it lists no free plan. App Builder Agent's free plan starts with Google sign-in and no card; the agent builds your first app and you get a free APK download of it, while editing further, more projects, signed builds and source export are on paid plans. What a free plan should really include is covered in AI app builder free plan: what you really get, and installing the file on a phone in install an APK on Android and fix "app not installed".

For Google Play, App Builder Agent's signed build gives you the AAB that Play needs, explained in signed APK and AAB for the Play Store. Google charges a one-time US$25 registration, and new personal accounts must run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days before going to production; the steps are in publishing on Google Play from the US, UK or EU. For iPhone, Replit is the direct route, with Apple's Developer Program at US$99 a year; App Builder Agent's route is the exported source built with Xcode on a Mac, laid out in can an AI app builder make an iPhone app. For the wider field, including Lovable, Bolt, Rork and FlutterFlow on the same rows, see best AI app builders in 2026.
