Choose a0.dev if you want an Expo app on the iPhone App Store with the least friction: as of November 2026 it builds your app by chat, uploads it to App Store Connect for you, sets up App Store subscriptions and pushes over-the-air updates, with 30 free credits a month to try it. Choose App Builder Agent if your launch platform is Android: you describe the app, tap through it in the emulator preview, change it by chatting, and press Download APK for a file you install on any Android phone, free for your first app. Both write React Native; only a0.dev builds iPhone apps directly.

Who each tool is for

a0.dev pitches itself as the way to build mobile apps and make money: AI coding, one-click app publishing, integrated payments and growth analytics in one place. As of November 2026 you chat with an AI coding agent that writes and edits the app; a0's docs say its projects are built on Expo, and that the latest a0 version uses Expo SDK 54. While you build, a live preview next to the chat runs a react-native-web version of the app in your browser, and a View on your Phone QR code opens it in the a0 phone app with hot reloading. The docs are open about the limits of both: the browser preview has no camera, push notifications or native modules, and payments do not go through in the phone app. For those you make a native build from the Deployment button, an IPA for iPhone or an APK for Android, in about two minutes.

Publishing is a0's centre of gravity. You connect your Apple developer account, pick the bundle ID and team, and press Generate & Submit; the build appears in App Store Connect and TestFlight. a0's homepage also names Google Play and the web as destinations, though as of November 2026 its publishing docs walk through the App Store only. Around that it offers Convex or Supabase as the backend, push notifications through its own API, built-in APIs for AI inference and image generation, a subscription system that syncs plans to Stripe (web) or the Apple App Store (iPhone), over-the-air updates that change your live app without a new store build, and an analytics dashboard. It suits people who want to sell an app on the iPhone App Store and are comfortable with a credit-based plan.

App Builder Agent puts Android first. You describe the app in plain English; an AI agent writes one React Native codebase (or Flutter, if you ask); the app runs in the emulator preview in the builder, where you tap through it; and you change anything by chatting. Download APK in the Preview tab gives you a file to install on any Android phone, and on paid plans a signed APK plus AAB is ready for Google Play. The free plan starts with Google sign-in, builds your first app and includes a free APK download. A hosted backend with an online database, sign-in and an admin panel is added when you ask; AI features in the app use the AI backend that comes with the project, with no API key; payments use hosted checkout with Stripe, Razorpay or PayPal on your own account. The same account builds websites and games. It suits people who want a working app on Android phones this week.

Choose a0.dev if

  • Your first market is the iPhone App Store and you want the build, the App Store Connect upload and TestFlight handled from one screen.
  • You plan to sell App Store subscriptions, and you want plans, features and offerings managed in a dashboard and synced to Apple for you.
  • You want over-the-air updates, so a bug fix reaches users without waiting for a new store review.
  • You are happy with a monthly credit budget, starting with the free 30 credits and moving to Pro or Max, with yearly billing as an option.
  • You already like Convex or Supabase and want your app's data there.

Choose App Builder Agent if

  • Your launch platform is Android, or Android first with iPhone later from the exported source.
  • You want to start free and install a working app on a real phone before you decide to pay.
  • You want to take payments on Android today, through a hosted Stripe, Razorpay or PayPal checkout.
  • You want to test with people by sharing an APK, before any store listing, and a signed APK plus AAB when you are ready for Google Play.
  • You also want a website or a game from the same account. The habit and to-do apps in the gallery show what a single description produces.

The same app in each tool

Take a small paid app: a habit tracker with daily check-ins, streaks and reminders, free for three habits and paid for unlimited ones. In a0.dev you describe it in the chat and watch the browser preview; you scan the QR code to try it on your phone. In the Payments tab you create a PRO feature, a monthly and a yearly plan, and an offering, then sync them to the Apple App Store. Reminders need push notifications, which a0's docs say only work in a native build, so you make an IPA or a TestFlight build to check them. When it works, Generate & Submit sends it to App Store Connect, and later fixes go out as over-the-air updates. For an iPhone subscription app this is a well-designed path. If you also want Android buyers, note that as of November 2026 a0's payment docs list Android as not supported yet.

In App Builder Agent you open the AI app builder and describe it:

Build an Android app called "Streakly". Users add habits with a name, an icon and the days of the week. A today screen with a big check-in button per habit, a streak count and a calendar heat map per habit. A daily reminder at a time the user picks. Free users can track three habits; a "Go Pro" screen unlocks unlimited habits and a dark theme. Calm design with a teal accent.

The app appears in the emulator preview within minutes. You tick off a few habits, check the streaks, then refine: "make the reminder say which habit is still open", "add a weekly summary screen", "add sign-in and save habits online so they survive a new phone". The last one brings in a hosted backend with an online database. "Make Go Pro open a Stripe checkout" adds a hosted checkout on your own Stripe account; before you list a paid app on Google Play, read Google's payments policy for digital purchases. Download APK in the Preview tab gives you a build to install and send to a few testers; on a paid plan the signed build gives you the APK and AAB for Google Play. More detail for this kind of app is in build a to-do and habit tracker app, and the one-click starting point is the habit tracker app maker.

What to expect if you switch

From a0.dev to App Builder Agent. There is no project import. If you are on a0's Pro plan, export your code first: it is an Expo project, so it is a useful reference while you describe the app again, screen by screen, and the running app on your phone is the best specification. Your data lives in your Convex or Supabase project, so plan how users' records will move, or start fresh if you are still testing. If the app is already on Google Play, an update has to keep the same package name and be signed with the key Google Play expects, so check what you hold before you move. You gain a free start, Android payments and a signed APK plus AAB; you lose a0's App Store upload, its App Store subscription setup and its over-the-air updates.

From App Builder Agent to a0.dev. On a paid plan, export the complete project and keep it. a0.dev builds from its own chat, so you describe the app to its agent with your exported project and your APK as the reference. Expect to set up the backend again in Convex or Supabase, and to connect your Apple developer account for the iPhone version.

Using both. You can prove the idea on Android with App Builder Agent's free plan, share the APK with real users for a week, and then build the iPhone version where the App Store path is shortest. If you plan the first week well, you learn more from ten testers than from any store listing.

Tip: whichever tool you use, test reminders, sign-in and payments on a real phone before you publish. Those three are where a preview and a store build most often differ.

Free options, stores and iPhone

As of November 2026 a0.dev gives 30 free credits a month with no card, with one app build and a single project workspace; code export, unlimited app builds and a custom domain come with Pro. App Builder Agent's free plan starts with Google sign-in, builds your first app and includes a free APK download; keeping on editing with the agent, more projects, signed builds and source export are on the paid plans. What a free plan should really include is covered in AI app builder free plan: what you really get.

For Google Play, the store wants an AAB, a one-time US$25 developer registration, and for new personal accounts a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days before production; see publishing on Google Play from the US, UK or EU and signed APK and AAB for the Play Store. For iPhone, a0.dev is the direct route, with Apple's US$99 a year developer program; App Builder Agent's route is the source export plus Xcode on a Mac, explained in can an AI app builder make an iPhone app. If you are weighing other App Store-first builders too, the Rork alternative comparison covers a native Swift option, and the wider field is in best AI app builders in 2026.
