Icon rules worth knowing
Google Play asks for a 512 × 512 PNG up to 1 MB for the store listing; inside the app, Android picks the launcher icon that matches the phone's screen density, which is why the same icon ships in five sizes. Since Android 8, launchers build icons from two layers and crop them into a circle, a squircle or a rounded square depending on the phone. Only the centre of the foreground is guaranteed to show, so the tool keeps your logo inside that safe zone. iOS icons must not be transparent, so they always get your background colour.
Keep the design simple: one symbol, strong contrast, no small text. An icon is seen at 48 pixels most of the time; if it does not read at that size, it does not work. The guide to app icons and names covers the choices in more detail.
Using the icons
In an Android Studio or React Native project, copy the mipmap-* folders into android/app/src/main/res/ and keep the file names. In Xcode, replace the AppIcon set in your asset catalogue with the one from the zip. For a website, link the favicons in your page's head and reference the 192 and 512 px icons from your web manifest.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The icons are drawn and zipped inside your browser. The image never leaves your device, which is also why the tool works instantly.
What size should my source image be?
Square and at least 1024 × 1024 pixels gives the sharpest results. A smaller or non-square image still works: it is centred on the background colour you pick.
What is the adaptive icon foreground?
Android 8 and later build icons from two layers: a foreground and a background. Launchers crop them into circles, squircles or rounded squares, so the zip includes the foreground layer with your logo inside the safe zone, plus the background colour and the XML that ties them together.
Which file do I upload to Google Play?
playstore-icon.png in the android folder: 512 × 512 pixels, PNG, well under the 1 MB limit. The launcher icons in the mipmap folders go inside the app itself.
